Productivity starts with one click

Have you ever thought about how many times do you click per day?

The average office worker clicks their mouse between 5,000 and 7,000 times per day. If we do some simple math and estimate that a click is done in one second, then 5,000 clicks correspond to 1.388 hrs a day, 6.94 per week and 360.88hrs in a year. In other words, we click 45 working days a year - before starting to write this post I didn't imagine the number will get so high so quickly.

Although it might become a new form of art and self-expression, the number of clicks to get work done impacts employees' productivity, it represents inefficiency.

Today Millennials sum up to 35% workforce population, and 75% by the year 2025, we are the short/mid-term future. We have grown in the era of: "click here, click there and you will get what you want", but everything has a limit, and so do clicks.

When we repeat the same action multiple times we get bored, even more, if in between clicks you have to wait for "load time". At that moment, our dopamine levels dropped and we became unsatisfied, disillusioned and we zone out. Our productivity drastically decreases, we are less likely to engage in such activities in the long run - we burn out.

While this is occurring at the workplace we also have an immense, dynamic source of stimuli; yes, I am referring to social media or another type of content that fits into an app, in the palm of our hands. "While I wait that the tedious software I use every day in my workplace finishes loading, let meme scroll and get a dopamine boost dreaming with the InstaLife I can't have", and there you go productivity out of the window.

So, how do we change all this at the corporate level? Do we need more sophisticated, more automated and faster tools that not only help the employee to get work done quickly but also represent a source of stimulus for the operator?. That's what I think, automation and innovation should be done even at the operations level. And the answer might start with only one click.
